Hearing God's Voice

SanDiegoAnglicans.com - Sun, 05/04/2008 - 17:11
Hearing God’s Voice A conference on the Healing Word of God was held on May 2nd and 3rd here in Poway, CA, led by Fr. Josh Acton, Rector of Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church in Yuma, and Executive Director of Desert Call Ministries. He also serves on the Clergy Support and Evangelism Committee’s of the Association of Western Anglican Congregations. It was a Spirit-filled experience that was replete with tears, joy and good fellowship. The weekend involved lots of prayer, worship, anointing, soaking in the Lord’s presence and learning to hear and see God’s Word. Here is a snippet from the weekend: When God speaks, something is revealed. If we believe that God speaks to each of us, what form does it take? It could be through something we read in Scripture, a spontaneous impression in our thinking, or through visions and dreams, to name just three that were discussed. When we get a word, since it’s mixed with ourselves, we must test it. The test is simple: compare it with the Word of God as set down in Holy Scripture. I learned a word that was new to me: rhema, which we were taught is a Greek word that refers to the voice of the Holy Spirit as it speaks to the believer in the present. God will not speak a word that contradicts His written Word, the Scriptures, so there is a kind of built-in safeguard to prevent misinterpretation. I spoke to Fr. Josh during a break and asked him about the main idea he would like to be imparted by this conference. “That the supernatural is normal for a Christian. It was normal in the 1st century church. That’s what Jesus gave his disciples.” He went on to refer to the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 10, when Jesus gave his disciples the power and commanded them not only to preach the Gospel as they went, but also to perform miracles. And as ye go, preach, saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils; freely ye have received, freely give. Matthew 10:7,8 [KJV] Spiritual, supernatural experiences with the Lord are a part of intimacy between God and man that the Lord longs for with his disciples. He said, "Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." [From Matthew 28:20] "I am with you always" includes today as well as the past. Josh Acton is a warm and engaging speaker. He freely shares his humanness and creates a safe and loving atmosphere in which to learn and draw closer to God. For more information visit www.desertcall.org

Open Thread (sticky): What did you think of Archbishop Venables' visit to San Diego?

SanDiegoAnglicans.com - Wed, 04/30/2008 - 22:14
Did you attend the meetings or service at St. Anne's with Archbishop Venables and Bishop Atwood? What were your thoughts, take-aways, surprises? Your comments here:

Pen Pals.

SanDiegoAnglicans.com - Tue, 04/29/2008 - 19:39
Archbishop Venables gets a letter from someone who signs her letters, "your servant in Christ." How nice. http://www.standfirminfaith.com/index.php/site/article/12120/ Make no mistake. At the end of the day, Schori's strange complaint with ++Venables is that he is providing safe haven for congregations, clergy, property, and entire dioceses that would otherwise be content to leave Canterbury (New York in her mind) all together and migrate to more traditional and Biblically conservative church domains such as Rome, Constantinople, Geneva, Colorado Springs, you name it. Think about that strategy for a minute. The many of us here in San Diego who have weighed that very decision of which denominational river to swim and have been graciously rescued by Archbishop Venables will have a rare chance to thank him in person, Wednesday 30th of April, upon his visit to St. Anne's Oceanside. (7:00 PM, see you there. Arrive early). I for one am looking forward to that opportunity. I'm sure many of you out there are too. My family and I remain Anglican today because this man offered our clergy and congregations a place to worship.

Video: Western Anglicans Congregations on AnglicanTV.org

SanDiegoAnglicans.com - Wed, 04/23/2008 - 22:23

If you've noticed this site lagging a bit lately, you should know I've been splitting my time helping out with some webmasterin' over at www.westernanglicans.org, the new, official site of one of the coolest Anglican projects happening this side of the Pecos. Visit their site to learn more about how this dynamic group of folks are taking the work of realignment seriously and moving ahead with Common Cause and beyond (APA) to create a powerful coalition, worthy of the call.

Western Anglicans Congregations is the one to watch, folks, and promises a bold experiment in what 21st Century Anglicanism will be all about.

I'll have more to say about the Western Anglicans project soon, but I wanted to point out a couple quick things for now. One is a quicky video I took at the last WA delegates meeting.  I posted it on AnglicanTV.org using their nifty new Brightcove Video Content Management System. The video can also be seen on the www.westernanglicans.org site.

(if you have trouble viewing this file here, try this link instead)

The second, more important point is that we really need to send AnglicanTV.org to GAFCON. Instead of each of us paying for our own $1800 tickets, let's just all send $10 / $25 / $50 to Kevin Kallsen and put him to work video taping the whole thing. Visit his new and much-improved site to make an online donation. Thanks!
